Lead pipes were common at one point before it was learned that corroding pipes result in lead in drinking water, and that it is a health hazard. Other adults are not immune, either, and can experience decreased kidney function, increased blood pressure, hypertension, and reproductive problems.
Keep in mind that lead in drinking water cannot be removed by boiling it, and although it can be filtered out with a water filter certified to remove lead, you would need to be diligent about replacing the filter.
